Key Benefits of CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30
Broad Spectrum Protection
The 100% mineral formula with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide helps form a barrier on the skin’s surface to reflect the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays.Hydrating Formula
Contains three essential ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to help restore the skin’s natural barrier and lock in moisture.Gentle on Skin
Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and allergy-tested, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.Skin Cancer Foundation Approved
Awarded the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Daily Use Seal of Approval.Hawaii Compliant
The oxybenzone-free formula is compliant with Hawaii’s ban on certain sunscreen ingredients.
Key Ingredients
Titanium Dioxide (6%) and Zinc Oxide (5%) – Mineral UV filters that form a protective barrier to reflect the sun’s rays.Ceramides NP, AP, and EOP – Help restore and maintain the skin’s natural barrier.Hyaluronic Acid – Deeply hydrates the skin and helps retain moisture.Niacinamide – Helps calm and soothe the skin.
Absorption
TiO2 absorbs UV radiation within the UVB (280-320nm) and UVA (320-400nm) wavelength ranges, diminishing the penetration of UV light through the epidermis. The amount and wavelength of UV absorbed is affected by the molecular structure of TiO2.
Semiconductor Band Gap Mediated Absorbance
The remainder of UV protection provided by TiO2 is through semiconductor band gap mediated absorbance of UV photons. At wavelengths above the semiconductor band gap absorption energy levels (long UVA and visible), TiO2 is predominantly reflective of light (up to 60% reflection) and non-absorbing.
Reflection and Scattering
While early inorganic sunscreens relied more on scattering to shield UV rays, current nano-sized TiO2 primarily uses absorption. The average range of reflection for TiO2 throughout the UV spectrum is only 4-5%, providing minimal protection via this mechanism.
Mechanism of Action
Titanium dioxide (TiO2) primarily protects the skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation through absorption, not reflection or scattering.The key mechanisms are:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Absorption

- Anatase – Tetragonal crystal system
- Rutile – Tetragonal crystal system
- Brookite – Orthorhombic crystal system
The anatase and rutile forms are the most common and used in cosmetic applications like sunscreens. The rutile form is more stable and has a higher refractive index, making it more effective at absorbing UV radiation compared to anatase. The chemical structure of titanium dioxide allows it to absorb UV light through electronic excitation. When a photon of UV light is absorbed, an electron is promoted from the valence band to the conduction band, creating an electron-hole pair. This electron-hole pair can then react with water and oxygen on the surface of the TiO2 to produce reactive oxygen species that can damage DNA and proteins in cells.
Key Precautions
Application Tips
- Dispense a small amount to one palm and rub hands together before applying.
- Apply to one area of the body at a time and thoroughly massage into the skin.
- The formula should spread easily without leaving a greasy residue or feel.
- All sunscreens should be applied liberally for full sun protection.
Reapplication
- Reapply at least every 2 hours, and immediately after towel drying, swimming, or sweating.
- Use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating.
Children Under 6 Months
- Ask a doctor before using on children under 6 months of age.
Sun Protection Measures
- Limit time in the sun, especially between 10 AM and 2 PM.
- Wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses.
Usage
- Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure
- Reapply at least every 2 hours, immediately after towel drying and/or after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating
- Use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating
- Children under 6 months of age: ask a doctor
