Patients should be monitored for side effects and use the lowest effective dose.                                     Dostinex is used:
- To stop breast milk production after childbirth when the mother decides not to breastfeed.
- To treat hormonal disorders caused by excess prolactin, such as irregular periods and abnormal milk production.
The typical dose is 1 mg (two 0.5 mg tablets) for stopping milk production, or 0.25-1 mg twice weekly for hormonal disorders. Patients should be monitored for side effects and use the lowest effective dose.                                                                                     The key benefits of Dostinex 0.5 mg tablets are:
- Inhibiting or suppressing physiological lactation after delivery when the mother decides not to breastfeed or when breastfeeding is contraindicated. A single 1 mg dose (two 0.5 mg tablets) on the first day after birth is effective in 70-90% of women.
- Treating hyperprolactinemic disorders such as amenorrhea (lack of menstruation), oligomenorrhea (infrequent menstruation), anovulation (lack of ovulation), and galactorrhea (abnormal milk production). The recommended initial dosage is 0.25 mg (half a 0.5 mg tablet) twice weekly, which may be increased up to 1 mg twice weekly based on the patient’s serum prolactin level.
The key ingredients in Dostinex 0.5 mg tablets are:
- Cabergoline 0.5 mg – the active ingredient, which is a dopaminergic ergoline derivative that directly stimulates the D2 receptors on the pituitary gland, causing inhibition of prolactin secretion.
- Lactose and leucine – the excipients or inactive ingredients.
Dostinex works by inhibiting prolactin secretion, thereby relieving symptoms caused by excess prolactin. Patients should be monitored for potential side effects and use the lowest effective dose
