Eliquis 2.5mg tablets 10’ct
Eliquis (apixaban) 2.5 mg tablets are used to:
- Reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation (AFib) not caused by a heart valve problem
- Treat blood clots in the veins of the legs (deep vein thrombosis – DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism – PE), and reduce the risk of them occurring again
- Reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs (DVT) and lungs (PE) in people who have just had hip or knee replacement surgery Eliquis can cause bleeding, which can be serious. Patients with a higher risk of bleeding should not take Eliquis. It is important to take Eliquis exactly as prescribed and not change the dose or stop taking it unless directed by the doctor. If a dose is missed, the missed dose should be taken as soon as remembered, but no more than one dose should be taken at the same time. The prescription should be refilled before running out, especially for patients taking Eliquis for AFib, as stopping may increase stroke risk.

Dosing Flexibility
- Eliquis can be taken with or without food, providing dosing flexibility for patients.
- The tablets can be crushed and mixed with water or apple juice for patients who have difficulty swallowing whole tablets.
Rapid Onset of Action
- Eliquis has a rapid onset of action, reaching peak plasma concentrations within 3-4 hours after oral administration.
- This allows for quick anticoagulation effects compared to some other oral anticoagulants.
Predictable Pharmacokinetics
- Eliquis has linear and predictable pharmacokinetics, allowing for consistent anticoagulation effects.
- This helps simplify dosing and monitoring for healthcare providers.
Renal Clearance
- Only about 27% of an Eliquis dose is cleared renally, making it a good option for patients with renal impairment.
- Dose adjustments are only required for patients with severe renal dysfunction.
Reversal Agent Available
- Andexxa® (andexanet alfa) is an FDA-approved reversal agent that can rapidly reverse the anticoagulant effects of Eliquis in life-threatening or uncontrolled bleeding situations.
Mechanism of action Eliquis (apixaban) is a selective inhibitor of factor Xa (FXa), a key component of the blood coagulation cascade. By directly inhibiting FXa, Eliquis prevents the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, ultimately reducing thrombus formation.Apixaban binds directly to the active site of FXa, blocking its interaction with its natural substrates. This inhibition of FXa interrupts the intrinsic and extrinsic pathway of the blood coagulation cascade, inhibiting both thrombin generation and development of thrombi.Importantly, apixaban’s inhibition of FXa is reversible and does not require the cofactor antithrombin III for antithrombotic activity, as is the case with some other anticoagulants.
Key Benefits of Eliquis 2.5 mg Tablets
- Reduces stroke and blood clot risk in atrial fibrillation
- Treats and prevents blood clots in legs and lungs
- Flexible dosing – can be taken with or without food
- Rapid onset of action, predictable effects
- Good option for patients with kidney impairment
- Reversible anticoagulant effects can be rapidly reversed
Key Ingredient
- Apixaban – a direct, selective factor Xa inhibitor that interrupts the blood coagulation cascade
Eliquis 2.5 mg Dosage
- Most patients: 5 mg twice daily
- Adjusted dose (age ≥80, weight ≤60 kg, or creatinine ≥1.5 mg/dL): 2.5 mg twice daily
- DVT prophylaxis after hip/knee surgery: 2.5 mg twice daily, starting 12-24 hours after surgery (35 days for hip, 12 days for knee)
- DVT/PE treatment: 10 mg twice daily for 7 days, then 5 mg twice daily. For recurrence prevention after ≥6 months treatment: 2.5 mg twice daily
Storage
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F-77°F), with excursions permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°F-86°F).
Reviews
Eliquis is an effective anticoagulant with a favorable safety profile compared to warfarin. Common side effects are bleeding-related. Careful monitoring is required, especially in high-risk patients. The availability of a reversal agent (Andexxa) provides an additional safety measure.

Chemical Structure of Apixaban
Chemical structure of apixabanApixaban, the active ingredient in Eliquis, is a synthetic organic compound with the IUPAC name “1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-7-oxo-6-[4-(2-oxopiperidin-1-yl)phenyl]-4,5-dihydropyrazolo[3,4-c]pyridine-3-carboxamide”.Some key facts about the chemical structure of apixaban:
- Molecular formula: C25H25N5O4
- Molecular weight: 459.506 g/mol
- It contains 1 hydrogen bond donor and 5 rotatable bonds
- The topological polar surface area is 110.24 Å2
- The calculated partition coefficient (XLogP) is 1.81
Apixaban belongs to the class of direct factor Xa inhibitors, which act by directly binding to the active site of factor Xa to inhibit its activity and disrupt the blood coagulation cascade. This unique chemical structure and mechanism of action make apixaban an effective oral anticoagulant medication.
